Yamachiku use only locally-grown and sustainably-harvested Moso bamboo from Kumamoto and Fukuokaa thick, fast-growing variety that can reach 20 meters (65 ft) in just six months but must mature for 35 years to be strong enough for their chopsticks.
The chopstick-making process involves 30 steps, taking 40 days for hand-painted chopsticks and 80 days for lacquered ones. Yamachiku handles everything from forest to finished chopstick.
